PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The restoration firm Cenaxo was hired to complete the extensive cupola restoration on the historic First Baptist Church in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The scope included significant carpentry repairs, as well as painting the wooden and steel structure. As the project was nearing completion, an unforeseen condition jeopardized the completion of the project. It was discovered that the original composite capitals were severely deteriorated and could not be salvaged. Freedom Cement was brought in to utilize their scanner and 3-D printer to print a replica unit that was then utilized to create a new mold replicating the original capital details. The new mold was then utilized to cast eight new Microcotta (www.microcotta.com) units. From start to finish, the process was completed within three weeks, and the scaffolding was removed in accordance with the original project schedule.
